To preface, I had the same type on our old car prior to selling it. Anyhow, this time around I tested them for accuracy. On cold tires (garaged overnight) I took the readings with a digital and analog gage. I adjusted the pressure to exactly 31.5 psi. The tire caps showed half green. I added .5 psi to each tire and they read all green. So the variation on them so far seems to be more than 4 psi below rating and they show. We'll see how they are doing in a month.
I have a set of both 32 & 36's. I just tested them on a tire that measured 27-28 psi on both a dial and a "pencil" gauge. The cap's green indicator is supposed to get smaller and smaller as the pressure is below the rated amount. Half green is supposed to indicate 5 lbs (or less) down. The 32's say the tire's great - full air pressure - perfect - the green is at max. The 36's indicate the tires down a bit but within 5 lbs or so - about half green. It's not worth the shipping to return them. I'll use them as extra covers, or maybe leave them on, hoping that some jerk will steal them and get what they deserve.
update: decided to use the 36 psi's on tires requiring 32 or 29 psi - kinda shows something. Sort of. Not sure if they're really better than nothing - will see.
