I recently purchased a set of Nankang Ns-20 noble sport tires for a set of slightly smaller than stock 17" wheels on my 07 mazdaspeed3. The 235/45R17 size Noble Sports were $20 to $40 cheaper per tire than the next two tires in that size at an online tire store.
They are VERY quiet and very smooth riding, much smoother than the Dunlop tires I had on the car previously. They dramatically improved the ride quality of my car on brick streets versus either the stock 18 inch wheels as well.
The handling is not quite as crisp, and the road feel is now a bit numb, but the quietness & smooth ride make up for that.
They seem to grip pretty well at the limit, though, and are good in the rain. They're actually not horrible in the snow -- I'm sure actual snow tires would be better, but these are tolerable.
I'd recommend these if you need to save some money, and are willing to sacrifice some handling and road feel for ride quality & less noise.
They actually work well in snow.
